About Final S words

Because the S ending marks grammar, an error here has two possible sources. A child who omits it may be unable to produce a final /s/, or may not yet be marking plurals and third person at all — an articulation question and a morphology question that look identical on a word list.

Only the endings that are genuinely voiceless appear here. After a voiced sound the same written -s is pronounced /z/, which is why dogs and runs sit on the final Z list while cats and walks stay on this one — a distinction spelling hides completely.

Practising Final S

Single-syllable nouns with a lexical S, such as bus and house, isolate the articulation without the grammar. Once that is stable, the plural entries let you check whether the ending survives when it also has to carry meaning.
