Final N Words for Speech Therapy
Words that end in /n/ — sun, moon, ten, run, green, train, plus the -tion and -sion words such as action and attention. A very frequent ending, easy to sustain, and the natural contrast set for two other final nasals: /m/ in some and sum, and /ŋ/ in sing and ring.
Also called word-final N, N in the final position, or words ending in N.

N blends and clusters
Once single words are stable, blends add a second consonant next to the target. Every list below is checked by pronunciation and links back to this position.
About Final N words
/n/ is produced by 90% of children by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), so a missing final /n/ is nearly always final consonant deletion — sun becoming su — rather than a problem with the sound. Like final /m/, the nasal can be held, which makes it a good early target for the deletion pattern: the child can hear and feel the word closing off instead of trailing away.
The other use is contrast. Children who front /ŋ/ produce sin for sing and rin for ring, and the final N list supplies the real words on the other side of those pairs, which lets the clinician show that the two endings mean different things. The same holds for the m/n distinction — sum and sun, ram and ran — which matters both for speech and, later, for spelling.
Practising Final N
Hold the final nasal — sunnn, moonnn — with the tongue tip on the ridge and lips apart, then release. Once the ending is reliable, shorten it. For the /ŋ/ contrast, pair sin with sing and thin with thing and ask the child to feel where the tongue is: tip up for /n/, back of the tongue up for /ŋ/. A mirror helps with the m/n pairs.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

- How many words have /n/ in the final position?
- Our dictionary lists 662 final /n/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example final /n/ words?
- Examples include ban, bean, bone, brown, chain, clean, corn, dawn.
- My student says su for sun — what is the target?
- Word-final consonants in general, not /n/. If the child says nose and night correctly, the sound is present and the missing piece is the ending — final consonant deletion, which is typical up to about three. Final N words are a good starting set because the nasal can be stretched and felt while the word closes.
- How do I use final N words with a child who fronts NG?
- As the contrast half of minimal pairs. A child who says sin for sing already produces final /n/ perfectly; the job is to show that sing is a different word. Pairs such as sin and sing, thin and thing, and win and wing let the child sort pictures by what they hear, and then by what they say.
