Speech Therapy Accuracy Calculator
Percent accuracy is correct productions ÷ total trials × 100: 14 correct in 20 trials is 70%. If you gave cues, report independent accuracy and accuracy with cues separately. Tap each trial as it happens, or type the totals.

Has the goal criterion been met?
Many goals use a criterion such as 80% accuracy across 3 consecutive sessions. Enter the session results in order, oldest first, and the checker looks at the most recent sessions in a row.
Enter the kind of number the goal names: if the goal says “independently”, use independent accuracy. The IEP team sets the criterion; this checker only does the arithmetic.
How to calculate percent accuracy in speech therapy
Divide the correct productions by the total trials and multiply by 100. Every attempt at the target is one trial, including the incorrect ones. Decide before the session what counts as correct (for example, the target sound in the word, whatever happens to the rest of the word) and use that rule for every trial.
20 trials: 14 correct with no cue, 4 correct after a cue, 2 incorrect. Independent: 14 ÷ 20 = 70%. With cues: (14 + 4) ÷ 20 = 90%.
The two numbers answer different questions. Independent accuracy shows what the student does alone, which is what most goals measure. Accuracy with cues shows what the student does with support, and the gap between them shows how much of the work the cues are still doing.
How many correct for 80% or 90%?
With few trials, one production moves the score a lot: in 10 trials each one is worth 10 percentage points, in 50 trials only 2.
| Trials | One trial is worth | Correct for 80% | Correct for 90% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 points | 8 of 10 | 9 of 10 |
| 20 | 5 points | 16 of 20 | 18 of 20 |
| 25 | 4 points | 20 of 25 | 23 of 25 |
| 30 | 3.3 points | 24 of 30 | 27 of 30 |
| 40 | 2.5 points | 32 of 40 | 36 of 40 |
| 50 | 2 points | 40 of 50 | 45 of 50 |
| 100 | 1 point | 80 of 100 | 90 of 100 |
Which number goes in the IEP: independent or with cues?
The one the goal names. IDEA requires each IEP to describe how progress toward the annual goals will be measured, so the goal's wording decides. “With 80% accuracy independently” is scored on independent trials; “given no more than one verbal cue” allows cues but limits them.
Recording cued and independent trials separately keeps both readings available. A student at 90% with cues and 50% alone is not where a student at 90% alone is, and a progress report should say which one it is.

Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate percent accuracy in speech therapy?
- Divide the number of correct productions by the total number of trials and multiply by 100. For example, 16 correct out of 20 trials is 80% accuracy.
- What is the difference between independent and cued accuracy?
- Independent accuracy counts only the correct productions made with no cue, model or prompt. Accuracy with cues counts all correct productions. If a student got 12 of 20 alone and 5 more after a cue, independent accuracy is 60% and accuracy with cues is 85%.
- How many correct is 80% of 20 trials?
- 16. For 80% you need 8 of 10, 16 of 20, 20 of 25, 24 of 30 or 40 of 50 trials correct.
- How many trials should I count in a session?
- Enough that one trial does not swing the score: with 10 trials each production is worth 10 percentage points, with 20 trials 5 points. Practice needs more than a data sample: the most cited guideline is at least 50 production trials in a 30-minute session, or 70 for severe speech sound disorders (Williams, 2012, as summarized by Sugden et al., 2018).
- Does this calculator save my data?
- No. Counts live only in this browser tab and are gone when you close or reload it. Nothing is sent to us. If you want sessions saved per goal with a progress graph, Ga-loo's Take data screen does that, with student codes instead of names.

Keep every session, not just today's
Ga-loo's Take data screen works like this calculator for every goal and up to 6 students at once, saves each session to the goal's progress graph and drafts the session note. Students are kept under a code, not a name. Free for 3 students, no card.
