About Final TH words

90% of children produce voiceless TH by 6;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), later than any other consonant, so a final TH error in a five-year-old is usually within normal limits. In word-final position the substitution is again /f/ — bath becomes baf, tooth becomes toof.

Final TH is frequently the last item on an articulation plan, and not only because of the age norm: the sound is quiet, brief, and easy to omit entirely at the end of a word without the listener noticing the difference between a substitution and a deletion.

Practising Final TH

Because the sound is weak, exaggerated length helps — hold the TH well past its natural duration so the child can both see and hear it. Single-syllable entries such as bath and math give the cleanest listening conditions.

Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.
