NG blends and clusters
Once single words are stable, blends add a second consonant next to the target. Every list below is checked by pronunciation and links back to this position.
About Final NG words
90% of children produce /ŋ/ by 3;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), and since it never occurs at the start of an English word, final position is where it is usually assessed and treated. The characteristic error is fronting to /n/: ring becomes rin, sing becomes sin. It typically appears alongside fronting of /k/ and /g/, and treating the stops often carries /ŋ/ along with them.
One caution before treating final NG: the -in pronunciation of -ing endings (runnin, goin) is a dialect feature across much of the United States, not an articulation error. The test is single-syllable words — a child who says rin for ring and sin for sing is fronting; a child who says runnin but keeps ring intact is not.
Practising Final NG
Single-syllable words such as ring, king, and long give the cleanest listening conditions, and holding the nasal out with a hand on the nose lets the child feel the resonance. The -ing forms come later, but they pay off quickly, because almost any verb can become a target inside a real sentence.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

- How many words have /ng/ in the final position?
- Our dictionary lists 526 final /ng/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example final /ng/ words?
- Examples include bang, bring, gang, hang, hong, hung, king, lang.
- My student says runnin instead of running — is that a speech error?
- Usually not. Shifting the -ing ending to -in is a widespread dialect pattern in American English. Check single-syllable words instead: if ring, sing, and long are produced with /ŋ/, the child has the sound and no treatment is needed for it.
- Why are there no initial NG words?
- English phonotactics do not allow /ŋ/ at the start of a word — it appears only after a vowel, in the middle or at the end. That is why this sound has two position lists rather than three, and why final position carries most of the assessment load.
