Word-final position is where voicing is hardest to hold: English devoices final consonants naturally, so a child working on J commonly lands on CH and bridge becomes britch. This is the same pressure that makes final Z drift toward /s/.
Because both the affricate and the voicing can fail at the end of a word, it is worth listening for which one is missing. Britch keeps the affricate and loses the voicing; losing the sound entirely is a syllable-structure pattern rather than an articulation one.
Practising Final J
Holding the vowel before the final J keeps voicing running into the consonant, which makes the target easier to reach. Minimal pairs where only voicing differs — such as H and age against each and etch — put the contrast directly in front of the child.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words have /j/ in the final position?
- Our dictionary lists 75 final /j/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example final /j/ words?
- Examples include age, badge, bridge, cage, change, charge, dodge, edge.
- Why are bridge and orange spelled so differently but on the same list?
- Because both end in the J sound. English spells it -dge after a short vowel and -ge elsewhere, but the pronunciation is identical, so bridge and cage belong on the same list even though the letters differ.
- My student says britch for bridge. What is happening?
- Final devoicing — the affricate is correct and the voicing has dropped out, turning J into CH. Minimal pairs that differ only in voicing target it directly.
