About Initial J words

J is the voiced partner of CH and comes in at the same age — 90% of children produce it by 4;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020). Two errors dominate: devoicing to CH, so jump becomes chump, and gliding to /y/, so jump becomes yump.

Because J is both an affricate and a voiced sound, it can fail on either dimension. A child producing chump has the affricate and needs voicing; a child producing yump has neither the stop closure nor the fricative — a considerably earlier stage.

A hand on the throat separates J from CH without changing anything about placement, which makes the voicing contrast concrete. If the affricate itself is missing, building it from a held /d/ released into the ZH sound mirrors the CH approach.
