About Initial W words
/w/ belongs to the earliest group of English consonants — 90% of children produce it by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020) — so a genuine /w/ error in a preschooler is uncommon. Far more often /w/ shows up in a session as what the child says instead of /r/ or /l/: wabbit for rabbit, wight for light. That pattern is gliding, and the sound to treat is the liquid, not the glide.
This list still has two direct uses. For a child with gliding, initial W words are the contrast set for minimal pairs — wing and ring, wed and red, wake and lake — where the child must hear and produce the difference. For a child with a motor speech disorder or limited lip rounding, /w/ itself is a target, and its early age norm makes it a good first success.
Practising Initial W
The lip rounding is the visible cue: /w/ starts from a tight oo shape and glides into the vowel. Words with a back vowel after it — wall, water, walk — hide the transition, while wait, way, and week make the glide long and obvious, so they are easier to hear and copy.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

- How many words have /w/ in the initial position?
- Our dictionary lists 203 initial /w/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example initial /w/ words?
- Examples include wage, wait, wake, walk, wall, want, warm, wash.
- My student says wabbit for rabbit — should I practice W words?
- No — the child already has /w/; what is missing is /r/. Use the initial W list as the contrast side of minimal pairs (wing and ring, wed and red) while the treatment target stays on the R list. Practising /w/ on its own would reinforce the substitution.
- Do wh- words like when and white count as W words?
- For most American speakers, yes. The historical /hw/ has merged with /w/ across most of the United States, and the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary transcribes them with a plain /w/, so they appear in this list. Speakers who keep the /hw/ distinction can simply skip them.
