Initial M Words for Speech Therapy
Words that begin with /m/ — mom, moon, milk, mouse, monkey, money. The first consonant most children produce and the one behind mama, so it is rarely a treatment target — but it is the standard starting point for children who are not yet imitating, and the reference sound for checking nasal resonance.
Also called word-initial M, M in the initial position, or M at the beginning of words.

About Initial M words
/m/ belongs to the earliest consonant group — 90% of children produce it by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020) — and it is present in babbling from around six months. A child who cannot produce an initial /m/ past age two is unusual, and the reasons are more often structural or motor than phonological: a cleft, low tone, or a motor planning difficulty that makes closing the lips while voicing hard to coordinate.
For most clinicians the list serves other purposes. In early intervention, /m/ plus a vowel builds the first words — mama, more, me — and pairs naturally with pointing and requesting. In resonance assessment, /m/ is the sound that should be nasal: a child whose mom sounds like bob is hyponasal, which points toward the nose and adenoids rather than toward articulation.
Practising Initial M
Lips together, voice on, air through the nose — a finger on the side of the nose feels the buzz. Hum first, then open into a vowel: mmm-ah, mmm-ee, mmm-oo. Words with a long, open vowel after the /m/ — ma, moon, meal, more — make the transition easiest, and requesting words such as more and mine give the child a reason to use it at once.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

- How many words have /m/ in the initial position?
- Our dictionary lists 396 initial /m/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example initial /m/ words?
- Examples include mad, made, mae, mail, male, mall, map, march.
- Why is /m/ so often the first sound taught?
- It appears earliest in development, it can be seen on the lips, and it can be felt as a hum on the nose or the throat — three cues at once. Adding a vowel makes a syllable with no extra movement, and mama, more, and me are among the most useful first words a child can have, which is why it opens most early intervention programs.
- My student says bob for mom — is that an articulation error?
- Probably not in the usual sense. The lips are closing correctly; what is missing is nasal airflow, which makes /m/ sound like /b/. That is hyponasality, often from enlarged adenoids or a cold, and it calls for a look at the nose rather than drill on the lips. A persistent pattern warrants a medical referral.
