About Medial M words
90% of children produce /m/ by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), and an intervocalic /m/ — hammer, summer — almost never fails on its own. The pattern that does appear is in nasal-plus-stop clusters: camp becoming cap, jump becoming jup. The nasal is short and the following stop closes the lips in the same place, so the /m/ is absorbed. This is cluster reduction, and it typically resolves by four or five.
Medial M is also the position where nasal resonance is easiest to judge in running speech, because the nasal sits between oral sounds and any leak or blockage shows up at the boundary. A child whose hammer sounds like habber is hyponasal; a child whose vowels around the /m/ sound nasal too may have velopharyngeal difficulty. Both are resonance findings rather than articulation errors.
Practising Medial M
For the clusters, stretch the nasal — caaammmp — so the child feels the hum before the lips release into the stop, then shorten it gradually. For intervocalic words, tap the syllables: ham-mer, sum-mer, fam-i-ly. Three-syllable words such as camera and tomato are also good for building syllable sequences once the two-syllable ones are steady.

- Yes. Because the /m/ is surrounded by oral sounds, any resonance problem shows up at the boundaries: a blocked nose turns hammer into something like habber, while a leaky velum lets nasality bleed into the neighbouring vowels. Listening to words like summer and family in phrases is a quick informal check before any instrumental assessment.
