Medial D Words for Speech Therapy
Words with /d/ in the middle — body, ladder, hidden. As with medial T, the intervocalic ones are flapped in American English, so ladder and latter sound identical; the real targets are the /d/ before a consonant and inside clusters, where it can be omitted altogether.

About Medial D words
90% of children produce /d/ by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020). Between a stressed and an unstressed vowel — body, ladder — American speakers produce a flap, the same quick tap used for medial /t/, so there is no audible target to correct there. Before a consonant, as in birthday and window, the /d/ is a true stop and can drop out, leaving birthay or winnow.
The cluster entries — hands, friends, cards, builds — carry the /d/ between a nasal or liquid and a plural or verb ending. Children reduce these by dropping the /d/, saying hans for hands, which is a cluster reduction pattern and generally resolves by age four or five. Words that end in a plural -ds are therefore both a speech item and a check on plural marking.
Practising Medial D
Pick words where the /d/ sits before another consonant — window, birthday, midnight — so the tongue must make a full closure rather than a tap. Slow the word and pause briefly on the closed /d/ before moving to the next sound. Leave flapped words such as body and ladder out of drill: a quick tap is the correct adult form.

A child producing a quick tap in ladder is matching the adult model. Look instead at words where the /d/ precedes a consonant.
- My student says hans for hands — what should I target?
- The cluster. The /d/ is being dropped from the sequence /ndz/, which is a normal reduction in young children and usually clears by about age five. If it persists, practise the three sounds slowly in order, and check whether other nasal-plus-stop clusters such as band and friend are reduced too.
