About Medial H words
/h/ is produced by 90% of children by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), and a medial /h/ is rarely a target in its own right. Its value is diagnostic: a child who has initial /h/ in hat but drops it in ahead or behind is treating the medial sound as optional, which is exactly what unstressed medial /h/ is in fast adult speech. The distinction that matters is whether the child produces it when the syllable is stressed.
Most of the list is compounds and prefixed forms — greenhouse, household, redhead, behind, ahead — so it doubles as material for multisyllabic sequencing and for morphology: the /h/ marks the seam where two meaningful parts meet. For older students that seam is worth pointing out, since the sound is a cue to where the word splits in reading.
Practising Medial H
Say the two parts separately and then join them — green, house, greenhouse; a, head, ahead — keeping a clear puff of air at the seam. Stress the syllable that carries the /h/: a-HEAD, be-HIND. If the child drops it in the joined form but not in the parts, slow the join and stretch the vowel before the breath.

- Is it an error if my student says a-ead for ahead?
- Usually not one worth treating in isolation. Check the initial list first — if hat and house are correct, the sound is present. Then check whether the medial /h/ returns when the child stresses the second syllable; if it does, the omission is a fast-speech reduction that adults make too, not an articulation error.
