Between two vowels the /g/ is voiced on both sides, which supports the voicing but does nothing for the back contact that fronting disrupts. The surrounding vowels decide the difficulty: back vowels hold the tongue in position, front vowels pull it toward /d/.
Medial position is a good probe for how solid a newly established /g/ really is. A child can produce a clear /g/ in isolation and still front it inside a word, because mid-word the tongue has to reach the back contact while the word is already moving.
Practising Medial G
Two-syllable words where /g/ opens the second syllable, such as wagon and tiger, give the cleanest medial target. Slowing the word at the syllable boundary lets the child feel the back closure before releasing it.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words have /g/ in the medial position?
- Our dictionary lists 252 medial /g/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example medial /g/ words?
- Examples include bags, blogs, bugs, dogs, eggs, flags, legs, logged.
- Why is magic not on the medial G list?
- Because the g in magic is pronounced as a J sound. Only words carrying the hard /g/ appear here, since the lists match pronunciation rather than spelling.
- Does progress on medial K transfer to medial G?
- Frequently, because both use the same back-of-tongue contact and differ only in voicing. Fronting is a pattern across velars, so treating one sound often moves the other.
