About Medial F words
Medial /f/ has to be produced while the word is already running, so the lip-to-teeth contact has to be made and released without interrupting the flow. For a child who stops the fricative, that momentum makes a stop closure more tempting than it is at the start of a word.
Because /f/ is acquired early, an isolated medial /f/ error in a school-age child is more often part of a wider fricative pattern than a single-sound issue. Checking /s/ and TH at the same time usually clarifies which it is.
Practising Medial F
Words where /f/ opens the second syllable, such as coffee and before, give the child something close to an initial F with a preceding vowel for momentum. A mirror still works here — the contact is just as visible mid-word.
