Medial P Words for Speech Therapy
Words with /p/ in the middle — apple, happy, open, puppy. Here the stop is caught between two other sounds, and a child who already says pie and cup can still lose it, either by leaving it out entirely or by letting the voice run through it.
Also called word-medial P, P in the medial position, or P in the middle of words.

About Medial P words
By 2;11, 90% of children produce /p/ (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), and medial position is rarely the place where it fails. When it does, the two usual patterns are voicing, so happy sounds like habby, and weak syllable deletion in longer words, where the whole unstressed syllable that carries the /p/ disappears and the word collapses to something shorter.
Medial /p/ also appears in many two-consonant sequences — helped, camps, dropped — where the stop is squeezed between another consonant and a word ending. These are less about /p/ itself than about cluster and grammatical marking: a child who says help for helped is dropping the past tense, which is a language target as much as a speech one.
Practising Medial P
Intervocalic words such as happy, apple, and open work best, because the lips close and release cleanly between two vowels and the child can watch it in a mirror. Slow the word down and stretch the vowel before the stop; the short pause with closed lips is the whole target.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

Read the guideFrequently asked questions
- How many words have /p/ in the medial position?
- Our dictionary lists 234 medial /p/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example medial /p/ words?
- Examples include airport, apart, appeal, appear, apple, carpet, chapel, cheaper.
- Why is a medial /p/ harder than an initial one for some children?
- In the middle of a word the stop has to be made quickly, between two vowels or next to another consonant, with less time to prepare the lip closure. Children also tend to keep the voice running through short medial stops, which is why happy can drift toward habby even when pie is perfect.
- Should I count words like helped and dropped as medial P practice?
- They are valid medial /p/ entries, but the /p/ in them is part of a cluster before a past-tense ending. Use them once the simple intervocalic words are stable, and listen for whether the child keeps the ending as well as the stop — losing helped to help is a grammatical error that needs its own attention.
