About Medial N words
90% of children produce /n/ by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), and an intervocalic /n/ — money, dinner — is almost never in error by itself. The pattern to listen for is in nasal-plus-consonant clusters: hand becoming had, want becoming wat, dance becoming das. The nasal is brief and shares its place with the following sound, so it is absorbed. It is a cluster reduction and usually resolves by four or five.
A second pattern is nasal assimilation, where an oral consonant in the word takes on the nasal quality of the /n/ — bunny becoming nunny, dinner becoming ninner. That is a whole-word process rather than a sound error and belongs with the phonological patterns, not with articulation drill. Both patterns are easy to check with this list because it has so many short, picturable words.
Practising Medial N
Stretch the nasal before the following consonant — haaannnd, waaannnt — so the child feels the buzz before the tongue releases into the stop, then shorten it toward normal. For intervocalic words, tap the syllables: mon-ey, din-ner, bun-ny. Keep the clusters and the between-vowel words in separate sets; they are different tasks.

- The /n/ before /d/ is being dropped — a cluster reduction. Nasal and stop are made at the same spot, and the short nasal disappears into the stop. It is normal in preschoolers and usually clears by about five. Lengthening the hum before the release, then shortening it, is the standard fix.
- What is happening when bunny becomes nunny?
- That is nasal assimilation: the /b/ at the start has taken on the nasal quality of the /n/ later in the word. It is a phonological pattern affecting the whole word rather than a problem with either sound, and it is addressed by contrasting words with and without the nasal — bunny and buddy, for example — rather than by drilling /n/.
