About Medial B words
/b/ is acquired by 90% of children by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), and medial /b/ is seldom an isolated error. The patterns that do show up are weak syllable deletion, where about becomes bout because the first, unstressed syllable disappears, and, in children with low oral tone or a motor speech disorder, a closure that never quite completes, so the /b/ comes out as a soft, w-like glide.
Medial B also sits in a large set of two-syllable words with a stressed first syllable — baby, bubble, cabin, rabbit, ribbon — which are ideal for building two-syllable sequences in apraxia work, because the second syllable repeats a lip gesture the child has already made. The word gives the child two attempts at the same movement in one breath.
Practising Medial B
Use words where the /b/ sits between two clear vowels — baby, about, above, cabin — and slow them down so the lips visibly close and reopen in the middle. If the closure is weak, ask for a stronger, deliberate lip press on the middle sound; a mirror makes the difference between a glide and a stop easy to see.

- Very. Words like baby and bubble repeat one lip movement across two syllables, which is exactly the kind of sequence apraxia therapy builds — the same gesture, twice, in a rhythm. They also allow the clinician to vary the vowel between the two /b/ sounds as a next step, moving from bubble to baby to cabin.
