Final B Words for Speech Therapy
Words that end in /b/ — cab, web, tub, job, club, grab, globe. This is the smallest position list on the site, because English has few everyday words ending in /b/, but it is the standard set for one specific error: final devoicing, where cab comes out as cap.
Also called word-final B, B in the final position, or words ending in B.

About Final B words
/b/ is produced by 90% of children by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), yet final /b/ lags behind the initial one in many children, because keeping the voice on through a word-final stop is genuinely harder — there is no following vowel to carry it. The result is final devoicing: cab becomes cap, tub becomes tup. It is common up to around age three and worth treating only if it persists or spreads to /d/ and /g/.
The useful fact for treatment is that English listeners hear final voicing mostly through the vowel, not the stop: the vowel before /b/ in cab is noticeably longer than the vowel before /p/ in cap. A child who lengthens the vowel and releases the stop gently will sound correct even if the closure itself is only weakly voiced, which is a much easier target than sustaining voice through the closure.
Practising Final B
Stretch the vowel — caaab, tuuub — and let the final stop be soft, almost unreleased. Pair each word with its voiceless partner where one exists, cab and cap, tub and tup, so the child hears that vowel length is what changes the word. With only a couple of dozen words available, expect to reuse them in phrases quickly.

- How many words have /b/ in the final position?
- Our dictionary lists 24 final /b/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example final /b/ words?
- Examples include babe, cab, carb, club, cube, globe, grab, herb.
- Why does my student say cap instead of cab?
- That is final devoicing: the voice switches off before the final stop is finished, so /b/ turns into /p/. It is typical in two-year-olds. If it persists, the fastest route is vowel length — a long vowel before a soft final stop is heard as /b/ by English listeners even when the stop itself carries little voicing.
- Why does this list have so few words?
- Because final /b/ is uncommon in everyday English: most short words that end in a lip sound end in /p/ or /m/ instead. The list is limited to common vocabulary that a child can picture, which leaves cab, web, tub, job, club, and a handful of others — enough for the one error this position is used to treat.
