Final R has no following vowel to shape it, so the tongue has to reach and hold the position on its own. The common error is vocalisation: the R collapses into the vowel and car becomes caw, star becomes staw.
A child with a clean initial R can still vocalise every final R, and that split is not a sign the program has failed — the two are different enough that clinicians often treat them as separate targets rather than expecting one to generalise to the other.
Practising Final R
Single-syllable entries at the top of the list let you hold the R and listen for the moment it collapses, which is easier to hear than in running speech. Pairing a word with a following vowel-initial word — star above, car is — sometimes recovers an R that is lost in isolation.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words have /r/ in the final position?
- Our dictionary lists 132 final /r/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example final /r/ words?
- Examples include air, are, bar, bare, bear, car, care, chair.
- Is final R the same as vocalic R?
- They overlap heavily. Most final R productions are r-controlled, and the vocalic R lists organise the same territory by vowel type. This list is organised by word position instead, which suits a caseload working position by position.
- Why are there fewer final R words than medial ones?
- English simply has fewer words ending in a consonant R than carrying one internally, and many candidates are excluded because the R has merged into the vowel rather than standing as a consonant.
