Initial R Words for Speech Therapy
Words that open with the consonant /r/ — the prevocalic R that sits directly before a vowel, as in rabbit and road. Checked against the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, so every entry is a true consonant R, not the r-controlled vowel in car or butter.

/r/ is the most common articulation target on US school caseloads and one of the last consonants to come in — 90% of children produce it by 5;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020). In the initial position the usual error is gliding: /w/ takes the place of /r/, so rabbit becomes wabbit and red becomes wed.
Prevocalic R is often where therapy starts, because the vowel that follows does some of the shaping for you. The same child can produce a clean R before one vowel and nothing usable before another, so an initial R list is rarely worked straight down the page.
Practising Initial R
Find the vowel context that already works — for many children that is a back vowel, as in room or road — and build outward from it before moving to front vowels like read and rain. Once a syllable is stable, the two-syllable entries lower down give you the next step without changing the target.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words have /r/ in the initial position?
- Our dictionary lists 527 initial /r/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example initial /r/ words?
- Examples include race, rack, racks, rage, raid, rail, rain, raise.
- Why is car not on the initial R list?
- Because the R in car is not a consonant. In car, door, and butter the R merges with the vowel into an r-controlled vowel, which is a different target with its own therapy path — see the vocalic R lists.
- Is initial R easier than R in other positions?
- Often, but not always. Prevocalic R benefits from the following vowel shaping the tongue, which is why many clinicians probe it first, but a child who glides consistently may find a stable vocalic R easier to elicit.
