About Initial S words

90% of children produce /s/ by 4;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020). Two error patterns dominate in this position: the frontal lisp, where the tongue pushes between the teeth and sun drifts toward thun, and the lateral lisp, where air escapes over the sides of the tongue and gives S its slushy quality.

Word-initial S is a singleton, which is a different target from the S clusters in stop, snake, and spoon. A child who reduces clusters may produce a perfect S here and still drop it in a blend — that pattern belongs with cluster reduction, not with S articulation.

Practising Initial S

Initial position gives you the cleanest listening conditions: nothing precedes the S, so you hear the onset without coarticulation. Single-syllable entries at the top of the list are the usual starting point before the longer words further down.

Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

Frequently asked questions

How many words have /s/ in the initial position?
Our dictionary lists 843 initial /s/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
What are some example initial /s/ words?
Examples include cell, cells, cent, cents, cite, psi, sad, safe.
Why are city and circle on the S list?
Because these lists match pronunciation rather than spelling. City, circle, and sun all open with the S sound, even though only one is spelled with the letter s.
Should S blends be practised from this list?
No — this list holds single S onsets only. Words like stop and snake are consonant clusters with their own error pattern and their own lists under S blends.
