Initial T Words for Speech Therapy
Words that begin with /t/ — toe, tea, top, table, tiger, turtle. An early alveolar stop that is more often the sound a child says by mistake — for /k/, for /s/, for TH — than the sound they get wrong, so this list is used at least as much for contrast as for direct practice.
Also called word-initial T, T in the initial position, or T at the beginning of words.

About Initial T words
90% of children produce /t/ by 3;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), and initial /t/ errors on their own are uncommon. What clinicians see far more often is /t/ standing in for another sound: tea for key and tape for cape in velar fronting, toe for so in stopping of /s/, and tank for thank in stopping of TH. In each of those cases the child has /t/ and the treatment target is the other sound.
The exception is backing, where /t/ itself is replaced by /k/ — tea becomes key, top becomes cop. Backing is not a typical developmental pattern; it appears mainly in children with phonological disorder, and it merits assessment rather than a wait-and-see approach. Initial T words are the direct target there, alongside minimal pairs against /k/.
Practising Initial T
The tongue tip touches just behind the top teeth and releases with a puff of air. For a child who backs, a tongue depressor or a bite of the tongue tip between the teeth locates the front placement; for contrast work, pair tea with key, tape with cape, tall with call, and ask the child to show you which picture matches what they said.
Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

- How many words have /t/ in the initial position?
- Our dictionary lists 234 initial /t/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
- What are some example initial /t/ words?
- Examples include tab, tag, tail, tale, tall, tan, tape, tar.
- My student says tea for key — should I work on T words?
- No — the child already has /t/; the sound that is missing is /k/. That pattern is velar fronting, and the target belongs on the K list. Initial T words are still useful as the contrast half of minimal pairs (tea and key, tape and cape), so the child can hear what the two sounds do to meaning.
- Is saying key for tea the same kind of error?
- It is the reverse pattern, called backing, and it is treated differently. Fronting is a normal developmental stage that most children outgrow; backing is not, and it usually signals a phonological disorder that needs assessment. For backing, initial T words are the direct target, with tongue-tip placement cues to bring the sound forward.
