Initial D Words for Speech Therapy
Words that begin with /d/ — dog, duck, door, day, doctor, daddy. An early voiced stop that appears in babbling before the first birthday, and the sound children most often reach for when a harder one is not yet available — de for the, doe for go.

About Initial D words
/d/ is among the earliest consonants — 90% of children produce it by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020) — and a missing initial /d/ after that age is uncommon. What clinicians see instead is /d/ used as a substitute: doe for go in velar fronting, and de or dat for the and that in stopping of the voiced TH. The child owns /d/; the treatment target is the sound it is replacing.
When /d/ itself is in error, the usual pattern is devoicing to /t/ — dog becomes tock — or, less often, backing to /g/. Devoicing of an initial stop is worth checking across the whole set, since a child who says tock for dog will often say pig for big and coat for goat as well; treating voicing as a feature is more efficient than treating three separate sounds.
Practising Initial D
Voicing is the usual target, and the throat buzz is the cue: a hand on the neck feels /d/ hum before the tongue releases and feels nothing on /t/. Pair real words where you can — dear and tear, dip and tip — and start with words followed by open vowels, such as dad, dog, and dawn, where the buzz is easiest to sustain.

- My student says doe for go — should I practise D words?
- No — /d/ is already there; the sound missing is /g/. That is velar fronting, and the target belongs on the G list. Initial D words serve as the contrast side of minimal pairs (doe and go, date and gate) so the child hears that the two sounds change meaning.
- Is de for the a D problem or a TH problem?
- A TH problem. Replacing the voiced TH with /d/ is stopping, one of the last patterns to resolve, and it is normal well into the school years. The child is using a sound they have — /d/ — in place of one they do not. Work on the voiced TH, and keep initial D words in reserve as the contrast set.
