Final D Words for Speech Therapy
Words that end in /d/ — bed, red, bird, cloud, bread, and the whole regular past tense in -ed after a voiced sound: played, called, closed, changed. Two errors live here, final devoicing and final consonant deletion, and the past-tense forms turn every one of them into a grammar question too.

About Final D words
/d/ is produced by 90% of children by 2;11 (Crowe & McLeod, 2020), but word-final /d/ trails the initial one because sustaining voice through a final stop is harder. Final devoicing — bed becoming bet, bad becoming bat — is typical in two-year-olds and usually resolves by three. Final consonant deletion, where bed becomes be, resolves around the same time, and the two are easy to tell apart by listening for the closure.
The regular past tense adds a further layer: called, played, and changed all end in /d/, so a child who says call for called may be deleting a consonant, reducing a cluster, or not yet marking tense. The non-verb entries — bed, bird, cloud, road — separate the speech question from the language one. If those are correct, the missing -ed is a morphology target, not an articulation one.
Practising Final D
Lengthen the vowel before the final /d/ — beeed, baaad — and keep the release soft; English listeners hear a long vowel plus a gentle stop as /d/ even when the closure itself is barely voiced. Minimal pairs make the contrast concrete: bed and bet, bad and bat, seed and seat. Start with single-syllable nouns and add the past-tense verbs once those are stable.
