About Final Z words
Final /z/ sits at the intersection of articulation and grammar. It marks plurals after voiced sounds (dogs, cars), the third person (runs, gives), and contractions (he’s) — so a child who drops it may lose grammatical information, not just a sound.
Word-final position is where voicing is hardest to sustain: English devoices final consonants naturally, and a child working on /z/ often lands on /s/ instead. Hearing dogs as docks is the practical consequence, and it is a common reason final Z stays on a plan after medial Z has resolved.
Practising Final Z
Words with a lexical Z, such as nose and rose, let you work the voicing without the grammar attached. The plural and verb entries then test whether the buzz survives when the ending also has a job to do.
