About Final L words
The dark L is acoustically and articulatorily different from the L that opens a word, and it comes in later. The common error is vocalisation: the tongue tip never arrives, the back stays raised, and ball becomes baw, milk becomes miwk.
A child with a clean initial L who still vocalises every final L is not stalling — the two allophones develop on separate timelines, which is exactly why final L deserves its own list and its own place on a plan.
Practising Final L
Because vocalisation is a missing tongue tip, the useful cue in this position is holding the contact longer than speech requires — ball with an audible, sustained L. Single-syllable entries make that easiest to hear before longer words are attempted.
