About Final K words

Word-final /k/ is frequently the easiest position for a child who fronts, which is counterintuitive but consistent: the vowel before the consonant can carry the tongue back into position, and back vowels do so particularly well.

That makes final position the usual entry point for treating velar fronting. Words such as book and back give the child a running start at the back contact, and once /k/ is reliable here it is generally taken to medial and then initial position.

Practising Final K

Single-syllable words with a back vowel — book, walk, rock — are the standard elicitation set for a fronted /k/. Holding the closure a beat before releasing it makes the contact something the child can feel rather than just hear.

Acquisition ages: Crowe & McLeod (2020), American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Educational content — an SLP chooses the target for a specific child.

Frequently asked questions

How many words have /k/ in the final position?
Our dictionary lists 258 final /k/ words suitable for speech therapy practice.
What are some example final /k/ words?
Examples include arc, ask, back, bank, bike, black, blank, blink.
Why start velar fronting therapy with final K?
Because a preceding back vowel already places the tongue near the target, so the child has less distance to travel. Initial position offers no such help, which is why it usually comes last.
Is final K deletion the same as fronting?
No. Fronting replaces /k/ with /t/, keeping the syllable intact; deleting the sound entirely is final consonant deletion, a syllable-structure pattern that is treated differently.
