Word-final CH has to be released with nothing following it, which makes the affricate audible in a way it never is mid-word. That works in the clinician’s favour: a dropped stop or a missing release is obvious at the end of a word.
The competing error at the end of a word is omission rather than substitution — the whole affricate disappears and beach becomes bee. Distinguishing omission from deaffrication matters, because a child dropping the sound entirely may be simplifying the syllable rather than the consonant.
Practising Final CH
Exaggerating the release on a single-syllable word gives the child both the auditory and the tactile signal at once. The list is compact enough to work through fully, which makes it useful for probing carryover.
