The best word list generator for speech therapy is one that checks how a word is said, not how it is spelled. For a free 12-word home list, LumaSpeech is the quickest. For deep filters and minimal pairs, Articurate Word Lab is the paid specialist. For long, dictionary-checked lists with a free printable PDF, use our free word lists. Phonics generators are built for reading: they sort by letters, so they are the wrong tool for articulation drill.
Disclosure: we build Ga-loo, one of the options below. We say where competitors do something better, and every price and feature was checked on the vendor's own site in September 2026.

What makes a good articulation word list generator?
A word list is a set of practice trials, so every word has to earn its place. Before trusting any generator, check that it:
Uses pronunciation, not spelling. “Car” has no consonant R, and “Thomas” starts with /t/. A spelling-based list lets both through.
Defines position by sound. Peanut ends in /t/, so it belongs on a final T list even though the letter sits near the middle of a long word.
Separates look-alike targets. Consonantal R and vocalic R, or voiced and voiceless TH, are different therapy targets.
Lets you control difficulty by syllable count and by competing sounds — the sounds a child typically substitutes.
Gives you enough words. A 12-word list works for homework; a high-trial session needs more variety.
Prints cleanly. Most lists end up on paper.
Our guide to why phonetic validation matters covers the spelling traps in detail.
LumaSpeech: the best free quick list
LumaSpeech's free generator gives you up to 12 hand-picked, child-friendly words for any of 24 single sounds or the R, S and L blends, in words, phrases or sentences, with no account. It also keeps voiced and voiceless TH on separate lists, as Home Speech Home does. When we checked all 822 of its words against the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, 809 passed; one was in the wrong position and the rest were borderline cases.
The trade-off is length: 12 words per list, and phrases built from the same carrier frames. Full results are in our LumaSpeech review.
Articurate Word Lab: the most filters
Articurate Word Lab is a paid web app, founded in 2025 and described as “built by an SLP”. It lists a 10,000+ word database, a minimal pair finder, separate modes for articulation, minimal pairs and motor speech (apraxia and dysarthria), syllable-count and phonotactic-structure filters, position targeting, printable flashcard PDFs and 4,000+ images. The site lists $59 USD a year per seat; without a subscription the app runs as a limited demo.
We could not test its lists without a paid account, and the site does not say how words are transcribed or checked. If minimal pairs and motor-speech lists are your main need, it is the most specialised option here.
Ga-loo free word lists: long, dictionary-checked lists
Our free lists take every common English word whose CMU Pronouncing Dictionary transcription contains the target sound in the target position. That makes them long — 511 initial R words, for example — grouped by syllable count, with competing sounds marked. Each list opens with a shorter starter set and comes as a free printable PDF with five trial boxes per word.
Start with initial R, initial S, initial L or the S blends, or browse all word lists.
Two honest limits. Our TH lists combine the voiced and voiceless sounds, where LumaSpeech and Home Speech Home keep them apart. And because the lists come from a general word-frequency list, they include adult words such as regime and roster — the starter set favours short words, but trim for young children.
Can ChatGPT generate articulation word lists?
It can draft one in seconds, but it predicts text from spelling and does not check pronunciation, so silent letters and shifting digraphs slip through. Treat its output as a draft and say every word aloud. We walk through documented failures in ChatGPT vs. a Phonetically Validated Generator.
Where can I find free articulation word lists?
Home Speech Home has 65 free word lists across articulation, phonology and language. Its articulation lists cover the target in the beginning, middle and end of words, using common, mostly one-syllable words chosen to limit interference from other sounds.
Mommy Speech Therapy offers free downloadable picture word lists by sound and position, such as initial S and final TH.
Both are fixed lists: quick and trusted, but you cannot filter them, and they are not generators. Our free word lists sit between the two models: fixed pages, but built from a dictionary check.
Phonics word list generator vs articulation word list generator
A phonics word list generator groups words by spelling pattern for reading instruction. The Phonics Word List Generator builds free printable lists and word cards for CVC words, digraphs, blends, r-controlled vowels, silent e and vowel teams, with an optional “focus sound”. Phinder finds words by grapheme-phoneme correspondence, sorted by frequency, for K–3 phonics lessons.
They are excellent for literacy work, and a poor fit for articulation. The “th” digraph pattern mixes voiced and voiceless sounds and includes words like Thomas; an r-controlled vowel list is vocalic R, not consonant R. For speech sound practice, pick a tool that works from pronunciation.
Which word list generator should you use?

If you need a finished worksheet rather than a list, that is a different tool — see our speech therapy worksheet generator guide, or try Ga-loo with free credits, no card needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free word list generator for speech therapy?
Yes. LumaSpeech's generator is free with no signup, and our word lists by sound and position are free with a printable PDF. Articurate Word Lab is paid, with a limited free demo.
What is the best articulation word list generator?
It depends on the job: LumaSpeech for short child-friendly lists, Articurate for minimal pairs and advanced filters, and dictionary-checked free lists such as ours when you need length and verified positions.
Can I use a phonics word list generator for speech therapy?
Only with care. Phonics tools sort by spelling, so they mix sounds that look alike on paper — voiced and voiceless TH, or vocalic and consonant R. Check every word aloud before using it for articulation practice.
Do word list generators check pronunciation?
Few say so. Among the articulation tools here, only our lists publish a pronunciation check: every word is looked up in the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary. LumaSpeech and Articurate do not describe how words are verified, and the classic free lists are hand-picked.
Where can I find free articulation word lists?
Home Speech Home and Mommy Speech Therapy are the classic free sources. Ga-loo publishes free lists for every sound and position, with blends and vocalic R, and a printable PDF for each.
