The best minimal pairs resource depends on how you run sessions. For an iPad app with the most pairs, Articulation Station Hive has over 7,500, on a subscription. For a one-time app purchase, Minimal Pairs Arcade Complete ($79.99) covers 12 processes with games. For physical photo cards, Super Duper's Webber Photo Phonology set has 280 pairs across 10 processes and a free data sheet. The most-reviewed printable is Adventures in Speech Pathology's Minimal Pairs Toolkit Bundle on TpT ($85, over 1,000 ratings). Free lists exist, from Caroline Bowen and Home Speech Home, but check them against the child's dialect before you print.
Disclosure: we build Ga-loo, one of the options below. We say where other resources do something better, and every price and feature was checked on the maker's own page or app store listing on 16 October 2026.

What makes a good minimal pairs set?
Minimal pairs therapy only works if the pairs do their job: the child's error has to turn one word into another. Before you buy or print anything, check five things.
One sound apart, in the child's dialect. A pair that works in one accent can fail in another. Caroline Bowen warns that her free sheets use Australian English, and that pairs "like saw-shore, and spa-star are minimal pairs in Australian English... but not in rhotic dialects such as Canadian, Irish, Scottish and most US 'Englishes'" (Bowen).
The right contrast for the pattern. Bowen's points for minimal pair therapy start with "Teach appropriate contrasts" and "Carefully select exemplars of an error pattern / phonological rule" (Bowen). A fronting child needs k–t pairs, not a mixed deck.
A handful, not hundreds. In Elbert, Powell, and Swartzlander's study, "for 59% of the test cases, three exemplars were sufficient for generalization to occur", and five were enough in a further 21% (Elbert et al., 1991). Bowen's summary: "it is definitely not a case of 'more is better'." A big library helps you choose; it does not mean you should use it all.
Both words easy to picture. The child has to point to, or ask for, either word. Abstract or rare words (doled, wane) slow everything down.
Listening and saying, with data. Most programs move from hearing the difference to producing it. A resource that tracks both saves you a separate sheet.
Bowen also lists approaches beyond conventional minimal pairs: maximal oppositions, multiple oppositions, and the empty set (Bowen). Few resources support them; her free worksheets and Articulation Station Hive (multiple oppositions) are the exceptions in this list.
What is the best minimal pairs app?
All of the established minimal pairs apps we found run on Apple devices; we did not find an established Android app.
Articulation Station Hive
Minimal pairs are one of 17 activities in Little Bee Speech's articulation app, with "over 7,500 minimal pairs to choose from", reachable by phonological process or by sound. Both words are pictured, and the app supports auditory bombardment, discrimination, and production; Little Bee notes that the pairs can also be used for multiple oppositions. Scoring with graphs is built in, and groups of up to 6 students need the Pro tier.
It is the biggest library here and has the strongest reviews (4.5 stars from 613 ratings on the App Store). The catch is the subscription: Hive Pro is $14.99 a month or $119.99 a year in the App Store, after a 14-day trial, with no one-time purchase.
Minimal Pairs Arcade and Arcade Complete
Aptus Speech and Language Therapy's app covers "12 common phonological processes including fronting, stopping, and cluster reduction", working through familiarization flashcards, five listening games, and five production games. Arcade Complete is $79.99 once, "ad-free, subscription-free", rated 4.8 from 18 ratings. The free Minimal Pairs Arcade includes the Fronting category and sells the rest as in-app purchases. It is the best pick if you want games and dislike subscriptions.
Minimal Pairs Academy
Smarty Ears' iPad app has "over 900 target words categorized into 23 distinct phonological processes", the widest process list here, with four modes, groups of up to 4, and a data dashboard with graphs and exportable report cards. At $19.99 once it is the cheapest full app. Ratings are thin (2.8 from 4 ratings), and the visible reviews date from 2019.
SLP Minimal Pairs Lite
A free iPad app with 8 processes and pictures of 367 words; cluster reduction is free and the rest unlock for $29.99. It was last updated in June 2022, so treat it as a budget option rather than a current pick.
Which minimal pairs cards are worth buying?
Webber Photo Phonology Minimal Pair Cards from Super Duper is the classic physical set: "ten decks of 28 photo pairs of minimal pair cards (560 total)" for final consonant deletion, fronting, stopping, cluster reduction, stridency deletion, gliding, prevocalic voicing, postvocalic devoicing, initial consonant deletion, and nasalization. The cards use real photos, and Super Duper offers a free printable data sheet for each deck. The full set was on sale for $79.75 (regular $159.50) when we checked; single decks are $15.95, which is the cheaper route if you only treat one or two patterns.
Silly Sets and Silly Sets 2, also from Super Duper, are illustrated, sentence-based decks that "show children how changing one sound in a word can affect the meaning of an entire sentence". Together they cover nine processes. Each deck was $13.48 on sale; the $49.95 bundle cost more than the two decks bought separately.
What are the best minimal pairs resources on TpT?
The most-reviewed listing is Adventures in Speech Pathology's Minimal Pairs Toolkit Bundle ($85, 4.96 stars from 1,032 reviews): over 600 pages with 584 minimal pairs cards in color and black-and-white, word lists, visual cue cards, listening tasks, and stories, for fronting, final consonant deletion, stopping, gliding, s-cluster reduction, and voicing. It teaches one structured method with its own cues and is licensed for one person.
A cheaper option is The Pedi Speechie's Minimal Pairs Bundle ($25.43 on sale, 629 reviews): 75 no-prep printable sheets with six pairs per page and nine parent explanation sheets, including backing. Boom Cards decks are another low-cost route for screen sessions; for example, Megan's Speech Room sells a $6 deck covering seven common contrasts.
Where can I find free minimal pairs?
Caroline Bowen's worksheets are the most complete free collection: minimal and near-minimal pairs across many processes, plus maximal oppositions and empty-set sheets. They use clip art and Australian English, so discard pairs that do not work in your dialect.
Home Speech Home has "3800+ minimal pairs", grouped by sound and contrast. The lists are text-only and include some entries that will not picture well, such as proper names (call–Paul) and letter names (key–V), so pick by hand.
The free Minimal Pairs Arcade and SLP Minimal Pairs Lite apps each include one process for free (fronting and cluster reduction).
Our process guides list checked pairs for velar fronting, stopping, gliding, final consonant deletion, and cluster reduction.
Is there a minimal pairs generator?
Yes, several tools build pairs on demand instead of selling a fixed set:
Articurate Word Lab finds "minimal pairs for any two sounds", which helps with rare error patterns, and exports flashcard PDFs. $83.88 a year, with a limited free demo. No data tracking.
SpeechTherapyMagic has a minimal pairs worksheet generator with a "curated pair database" for fronting, stopping, gliding, and more, in a visual or text-only layout. $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year after a 7-day trial.
Chatter Labs has a free Minimal Pairs Finder by sound, capped at 5 prints a day, inside a subscription platform ($149.88 a year for Pro Core).
LumaSpeech is a good free word list tool, but it builds single-word lists, not pairs.
General chatbots can also suggest pairs, but they do not check pronunciation, so every pair needs a manual check; see ChatGPT vs a phonetically validated generator.
Ga-loo minimal pairs: printable sets by process
Ga-loo builds a printable minimal pairs set for one phonological process: fronting, stopping, gliding, final consonant deletion, cluster reduction, prevocalic voicing, final devoicing, or deaffrication. Within a process you can pick a single contrast, such as /k/ → /t/ or /l/ → /w/. Every pair comes from 132 pairs checked against the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, so the two words differ by exactly one sound in American English, and both words are pictured.
A set has 4 to 8 pairs, in line with the small-set evidence above. The PDF has picture pages with four pairs each, a data sheet with separate listening and saying columns, and a black-and-white home page for families. For teletherapy, screen mode shows one pair at a time and the child picks the word they heard, with correct and incorrect tallies. If you track students, a process can be a student's goal, stored under a short code rather than a name.
Honest limits: the library is far smaller than Articulation Station Hive's or Webber's. Some contrasts, such as "j" vs /d/, have only two or three good pairs, so they appear only inside whole-process sets. There are no maximal oppositions, multiple oppositions, or empty-set sets, no vowel contrasts, and only American English. It makes printables and a screen view, not games. Free accounts get 5 packs, then 3 a month; Pro is $79 a year or $9.99 a month.
Which minimal pairs resource should you use?
You treat many phonological kids on an iPad: Articulation Station Hive, for the size of the library.
You want an app without a subscription: Minimal Pairs Arcade Complete, or Minimal Pairs Academy if budget matters most.
You prefer cards on the table: Webber Photo Phonology decks, bought singly for the processes you treat.
You want a full printable program: the Minimal Pairs Toolkit Bundle on TpT.
You need a fresh, pictured set for one process, with a data sheet and a home page: Ga-loo.
You need an unusual contrast: Articurate Word Lab.
You have no budget: Bowen's worksheets, checked against your dialect, plus the pairs in our process guides.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free minimal pairs app?
The free Minimal Pairs Arcade app includes the Fronting category, and SLP Minimal Pairs Lite includes cluster reduction for free. Both sell the remaining processes as in-app purchases.
How many minimal pairs should I use in therapy?
Fewer than most sets contain. In Elbert, Powell, and Swartzlander's 1991 study, three exemplars were enough for generalization in 59% of test cases and five in a further 21%. Many SLPs start with 3 to 5 pairs per contrast and add more only if the child does not generalize.
Is there a minimal pairs app for Android?
We did not find an established one. Web-based tools work in any browser, including on Android tablets: Chatter Labs, Articurate Word Lab, SpeechTherapyMagic, and Ga-loo.
Do minimal pairs work for a distorted R or a lisp?
Usually not. Minimal pairs target phonological patterns, where the child swaps one sound for another. A distorted /r/ or a lisp is an articulation error that needs work on making the sound itself. Our minimal pairs guide and gliding guide explain the difference.
What is the difference between minimal pairs and maximal oppositions?
Conventional minimal pairs contrast the child's error with the target (tea vs key). Maximal oppositions contrast the target with a sound that differs from it in many features and that the child already knows. Bowen's overview of minimal pair therapies compares the four approaches.
