24 short phrases for practicing the SL cluster at the start of a word — the step between single SL words and full sentences. Every phrase is pronunciation-checked and avoids the sounds children commonly swap in, so each repetition stays on target.
Why practice SL in phrases?
A child who can say slide on its own often reduces the cluster once another word comes first — the blend now has to survive in connected speech. Short phrases add that step without adding much length.
Model each phrase, then have the child repeat it. When the whole cluster stays intact across a few sessions, move the same targets into sentences.

- Why do these phrases avoid other tricky sounds?
- Sounds that children commonly substitute can pull a fragile new cluster off target. At phrase level we keep practice clean; those sounds come back naturally at sentence level.
- When should a child move from SL words to phrases?
